My 13 Years Summary As Gamified Mobile App Expert

I

was the founder of Onezine, a Marketing-Technology (MarTech) Company in Singapore, and I have been doing focusing on implementing gamification to all the mobile apps and projects that I have done. Below are a summary of our portfolio:

Carl's Jr

Who are they : Western fast food

Problems : Current methods of marketing like vouchers or membership programs cannot get return customers effectively, as the latter are reluctant to carry them around because of either their heftiness or simply not being reminded to bring them along. Reaching out to clients is limiting, because sending SMS is now restricted with privacy law, emails get blocked by SPAM filters and, worst of all, designing and printing of flyers or vouchers are a huge hassle which take up resources and time during distribution, as well with very low results that is difficult to track. None of the above can accurately tell you the effectiveness of a campaign.

Regain Time : Creating and distributing a digital voucher to all customers takes only a matter of minutes. Updating any content or details is immediate. Clients are reached effectively with exciting promotional message through online notifications.

Who are they : Tertiary Institution

Problems : The alumni of the school used to send email newsletters directly to its graduates, but they are poorly received, as their effort is spent mostly on quality content that usually end up in the Spam folder. Also, many registrations for events or contests are done through an email address.

Solution : Digital Newsletter App

Regain Time : The alumni can now upload content on their own without waiting for their corporate comms department to format it into an email newsletter for them.

Regain Space : All the content, even the previous ones, can already be found on one app.

Regain Money : The investment in creating the content is better returned when they can use mobile notifications to send information out to their members about the latest event registrations and content that are freshly uploaded on the same day, instead of waiting for them to be compiled.

Moonriver

Who are they : Fashion Boutique

Problems : With the rising cost of retail space, Moonriver cannot put its different variety of apparels and stock in one place. Also, the boutique wants their customers to be aware of their e-commerce website where they can look at other designs.

Solution : Self-Help Kiosk

Regain Time : Staff do not need to call every outlet to find a missing design that the customer wants. Customer, on the other hand, can also conveniently browse through designs and have the assistant quickly bring it out for her.

Regain Space : The kiosk now shows every single design and colour available for each item without keeping the stock at the outlet itself. This used to be impossible for physical samples.

Regain Money : Customers find designs they didn't know was even available. The boutique doesn’t lose sales when customers can order an item at the kiosk instead.

Harper's Bazaar

Who are they : Online Shopping Guide

Problems : Harper’s Bazaar came to us because their print was limited, and they wanted their readers to always keep an issue by their side to always remember the links for the online shops. They also realized that it would be too tiresome for their clients to manually key in the URLs to reach those shopping sites.

Solution : Digital Publication iPad App

Regain Time : Readers now save time by simply tapping on the links provided to access the online shops. For the publisher, every instance of time is significantly reduced, from design and changes to publishing and distribution. It will also still be available online after many years, unlike its print counterpart that is usually discarded after a couple of months.

Regain Space : In a digital format, a magazine now has an unlimited supply of copies and can reach readers internationally without needing a giant warehouse to store them in. That goes the same for the readers who wish to keep their own copy in a pocketable gadget.

Regain Money : Publishers can save the money they usually use to pay for printing and distribution. To top it off, they learn which page or article gets read the most or the least, so they know what else to write about in the next issue.

Lee Kim Tah

Who are they : Holdings Company (Construction and Restaurant business)

Problems : The HR staff in LKT have to work doubly hard because not only do they have to take care of the employees in their own office, but also the staff at their restaurant. Everything is still being done manually. This constitutes to a crazy amount of paperwork to go through, like rostering, timesheets, annual leaves, claims and overtime, before finally calculating the final figure of their salary.

Solution : Cloud Human Resource Management

Regain Time : Time is drastically saved for everyone. The staff can conveniently apply for leave from anywhere, and the management do not have to go into the trouble of having to chase them to fill up their request form. They no longer need to manually calculate overtime or remaining leaves as well because it can be done automatically now. Paper filing or hunting for employee history is not a time-consuming affair anymore.

Regain Space : Other than not requiring storage space for files of employee data, work can easily be done from anywhere by anyone appointed in the world. The management of companies across a few countries is also much convenient now.

Regain Money : Miscalculation and human error are a tedious and sensitive affair for the HR department, as they would need to pour through all the paperwork again to justify the amount. Having a proper system eliminates the potential of human error and saves money for the company.

Capitaland

Who are they : Residential Property Developer

Problems : Marketing content held by the sales agents are not consistent, as some have the latest information on their website, while others do not. Also, home buyers get confused with many non-official websites online, making them unsure of which information to trust. Presenting project details from a website is highly dependent as well on the internet connectivity, which is sometimes slowing down the presentation or not being presented at all. The sales agent also has to check back with Capitaland to see whether their proposed units is still available or not.

Solution : Panoramic Tour

Regain Time : All necessary details of several projects are preloaded into the app which becomes independent of internet availability after the content has been downloaded. Agents can now present with full multimedia and details at their fingertip (including all of the floorplans in its exact building layout) in a standardised manner and updated through the app.

Regain Space : Agents do not need to carry (or store) stacks of brochures to be left behind or mailed out. Instead, they can send people a link to download the app.

Regain Money : With all their content available on the app, quantity is unlimited and distribution is instantaneous, hence saving printing and distribution cost. Now, they can reach more potential buyers when they can also get the app from the app stores.

Goldbell

Who are they : Commercial Vehicles Provider

Problems : Goldbell is made up of many subsidiaries that provide a one-stop shop for commercial vehicle owners in terms of sales, rentals, trade-ins, maintenance, fleet management and even insurance. However, each of this is manned by a different salesperson. Handing over information to each agent is hard work and affects the potential sales of the business. Using a standard printed brochure to sell any vehicle doesn't have much impact either. With a manual quotation process, it slows down the entire trading cycle by needing each subsidiary agent to return to the office to type it out.

Solution : Sales Kit App

Regain Time : The salesperson can now be easily trained with a standard sales kit that has a stronger effect with a quotation system. The app can quickly generate a quotation on the spot by simply choosing the vehicle model and quantity. Upon tapping on “Send”, a copy goes immediately to the customer, as well as to the sales coordinator and the manager.

Regain Space : The salesperson can be better equipped with all the updated product and service details on his iPad. Price lists, contracts and brochures are also kept digitally and up to date.

Regain Money : To add more value to the customer, a single salesperson can now promote and upsell each of their add-on services, without any hassle, on a single platform that integrates all of their services together and to give an overall discount where appropriate.

Lorenzo

Who are they : Sofa Manufacturer and Distributor

Problems : Because of too many products in too many catalogs, both old and new, the salesperson spends a lot of time in finding them when requested, or simply because the catalog is not available. Updating agents and distributors across the regions on which product is still available or not is a tedious job as well.

Solution : Sales Kit App

Regain Time : The salesperson can now instantly retrieve the requested sofa using the keywords or the model number from their online database, equipped with all the necessary specs. They can also create different customised groups of sofa (based on themes, colours, or even customers’ names) so that they can conveniently propose it to their potential clients.

Regain Space : With every single sofa now better visualised in 24 colours, the company no longer has to produce the coloured sofa until the order is placed. On top of this, there is no need either to keep multiple physical copies of their catalogs.

Regain Money : During foreign trade shows, their distributors can only focus on the available sofas and not end up promoting one that is out of stock or outdated.

Tubao

Who are they : Wholesaler of wood laminates

Problems : When interior designers request for quotations and swatches after visiting home owners in the night, they are sent via email. Each batch of swatches, which interior designers give too easily to all homeowners, is expensive to produce. The long threads of email exchanges can take hours and become confusing for all parties involved.

Solution : Sales kit App

Regain Time : The Sales Kit App auto generates and returns a complete templated quotation without any human intervention. Thus, Tubao has enough time for other transactions and merely has to follow up once a week.

Regain Space : Get unlimited and latest designs of digital swatches that can easily be viewed on the app without eating up storage space.

Regain Money : The app is a marketing tool that allows more interior designers to easily distribute swatches and quotations, and find more customers. With shorter turnaround time, more money can be expected.

Emerson

Who are they : Infrastructure Technologies Provider

Problems : Managing the partners and the distributors around the region requires encouragement of the use of websites to be able to access all of the latest brochures. If not, whenever any of the content is updated, the distributors will be unaware of them. Also, since the website is highly dependent on internet, companies in poor connectivity countries will experience issues in utilizing the website.

Solution : Sales Kit App

Regain Time : Distributors across the network get notified of the latest updated brochures and documents that will help with their sales.

Regain Space : The entire brochure and the catalog library are available offline at their fingertips in the app in selectable multiple languages.

Who are they : Residential Property Developer

Problem : Potential home buyers do not necessarily have a clear understanding of the schematics used in floor plans.

Solution : Augmented Reality (AR)

Regain Time : After a showroom is torn down, the virtual 3D model lives on for all sales agents to use for selling, and for homeowners to preview.

Regain Space : Property developers would love to have their building and apartment models at every sales table, but the physical structure of the lot makes it impossible. With AR, however, a whole library of models can be loaded onto tables of any size.

Regain Money : Agents ideally want to be able to carry the physical models of the apartments to better help their sales. With AR, they can take all the variations of apartment replicas in their pocket wherever they go and, best of all, customers can keep them too!

The Network Hub

Who are they : Education supplies and courses

Problems : The Network Hub was appointed by Ministry of Environment and Water Resource to make their learning gallery for students more engaging and fun.

Solution : Interactive map with mini games on iPad App

Regain Time : Students can spend their time more effectively by having a better understanding of the lessons through the engaging games from the app.

Regain Space : Digital games definitely save more space than physical showcase. The engagement is also for everyone at the same time instead of one at a time using a conventional “interactive” exhibit.

Regain Money : Money is saved by not having to print worksheets and giving away pencils to every batch of students that visit the gallery.

1Menu

We believe a menu is the start and end of a restaurant business and if you’re a foodie or gastronome, 1Menu is a must-have app! More than just delivering the best restaurant voucher deals based on your nearest location, it offers content on food trends and happenings at your fingertips. Our hosted menus come with interactive elements such as food vlogs and editorial content. You can also post your comments on all the signature dishes based on each menu. It is certainly ideal for tourists who want to discover the best culinary deals in Singapore without having to trawl through dozens of food review-based websites and apps. Local foodies can stay in touch with new menus, new chefs in town, food happenings, best deals around you and be entertained by food vlogs such as cooking demonstrations or guest chef appearances.

Island Optical Systems

Who are they : Engineering Optics Supplier

Problems : A trade show is coming up. However, having a huge catalog listed on their website is not going to be an effective way to present during the show due to the poor internet speed usually found during such an event. Moreover, they only have a limited number of physical catalogs to give away.

Solution : Offline Categorized Digital Catalog

Regain Time : They can now get to their product quickly without flipping through the printed catalog or waiting for the webpage to load during the trade shows. Distribution is also easier with just a link.

Regain Space : Booth space is usually very limited, so not needing to store their printed catalogs there allows them to better utilize the area.

Regain Money : With a downloadable catalog in a digital format, they can always distribute it to potential clients without investing in print. It also comes with an enquiry form, accessible from every page, to get more leads.

Hotel Grand Park

Who are they : Hotel

Problems : The hotel’s pool bar, BarCanary, usually has their printed menu wet due to the way the pool users handle them. The company wants to have a cost-effective strategy to regularly revamp and update their menus easily.

Solution : iPad Digital Menu

Regain Time : Whenever the hotel needs to change an item on the list, they can effortlessly make the change in all menus instantly within 5 minutes without going to every table to replace them.

Regain Space : They can now interchangeably use different festive designs without needing a physical space to store them. They can also manage more than 1 restaurant’s menu from anywhere in the world on a single system.

Regain Money : We have designed a PowerPoint template which will specifically allow them to change background and content as and when needed, and then upload it into our CMS without engaging any designers and printers. Also, it will not be as expensive as printing.

ClassACT!

Class ACT! is the magazine that focuses on secondary school life and school-centric things that are of interest to today's secondary school student. It aims to spread positive messages of empowerment and inspiration for secondary students through highlighting outstanding and well-rounded students from Singapore as well as around the world. It is our belief that youths learn best through peer-to-peer learning and by looking at other youths as role models.

Platform

Built as a fully interactive iPad magazine app, it can be instantly distributed on the AppStore and contain multimedia content from the schools.
It is currently planned as a bi-monthly publication.


Cosmopolitan Bride

Who are they : Annual Wedding Magazine

Problems : Printed magazines are flat and non-interactive, thus leaving the mood of the content out. With the limited paper space allowed, products are reduced in size and packed closely together. Even the scenic honeymoon photos are not viewed in full spread, but tucked in a tiny rectangle in a corner. Readers have to manually key in URLs to find out more information about stuff.

Solution : Interactive Digital Publication

Regain Time : Every instance of time is significantly reduced from design and changes to publishing and distribution. It is also still available online after several years.

Regain Space : In a digital format, pages extend into pop-up layers, swipeable extra pages that can even afford 1 product per page in its full glory, or a movie clip that tells a story that allows interactivity to engage you throughout. Problems : MCC Property Developer has limited budget in printing out the quantity required to distribute promotional materials to as many people as possible after trying to get them into the showroom first. Placing too many ads on TV is also too expensive to consider.

Problems : JTB has engaged ADK to design their print annual Info-guide, yet distribution is limited by their budget and the number of copies produced. They want to reach to a wider audience and make it always available for potential visitors.

Solution : Digital Publication Facebook App

Regain Time : Their content is now published and accessible in an instant by the press of a button.

Regain Space : They save a significant amount of storage and distribution space as their digital content now reaches further, wider and without limit.

Regain Time : By capturing every perspective of the apartment into a digital format, we are extending its lifespan indefinitely. Customers can “tour” the apartment and look at every corner of their potential home, even after closing hours at the comfort of their seats.

Regain Space : This virtual space will continue to exist for anyone who needs to look at it once more, regardless if there is still an actual showroom or not and potential homeowners can view the showflat from anywhere in the world with just one click.

Regain Money : Marketing dollars are better invested by ‘bringing’ the showflat to a bigger and wider pool of customers who cannot come down to the area. When agents are not in the showroom, they can now “sent” the showroom to the potential buyers with a simple web link. .

Mr Bean Case Study

The Brief: Mr Bean needed new technologies that could help them streamline and measure all of their marketing efforts, and save costs (printing and distribution costs were skyrocketing and eating into their revenue).

Our Solution: In order to meet their needs, we developed a Mobile Application that serves as a CRM and marketing tool.

With this app, Mr Bean has seen an increase in their brand engagement and sentiment. Their customers can now keep track of all and any promotions from Mr Bean and receive personalised incentives.

Barcook Case Study

The Brief: “We want to be more.”
Barcook’s values and beliefs were dedicatedly simple, literally. The owners have poured all of their hearts and soul into the business, and this can be seen through their passion and devotion for bread and its simplicity.

Our Solution: We crafted our campaigns around 2 main pillars: Dedicatedly Simple and Meaningful Engagement.
